Vaccine producers testing formulas against sub-variants.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report this week showing that the BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants of Omicron 52% of all current COVID-19 cases in the United States as of June 25. In the week of June 18, the sub-variants accounted for just more than a third of all cases.
The CDC and COVID-19 vaccine makers are concerned that, though all current vaccines are somewhat effective against the sub-variants, they are not as effective as they were against the original coronavirus strains. Pfizer and Moderna have begun testing new versions of their vaccines against the quick-spreading strains, and the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) will be meeting to discuss if there are any changes to the vaccine design they would like to recommend.
